A LOOK AT NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY AND ITS INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALLING OPPORTUNITIES

Football is the most popular sport on the planet. FIFA estimates that there are 3.5 billion fans worldwide. It comes as no surprise that for many students, football plays a real part in deciding where they wish to study. In this series we are going to be looking at some of the top footballing universities in the UK and worldwide, this week looking at the Nottingham Trent University (NTU).

Nottingham Trent University is an institution that has huge pride in its footballing ability. There are plenty of opportunities for all to get involved, whether it be a 5-side kick about or competing for one of the University teams.

The men’s team currently consists of 3 teams and is ranked in the top 10 football clubs in the UK. Each squad trains at least twice a week and has games on a Wednesday. The first team also has strength and conditioning sessions throughout the week.

Being part of the NTU sports designated performance program, the club receives several benefits.

  • Access to coach run S+C sessions (remote and in-person)
  • Free access to physiotherapy and sports therapy
  • Free NTU performance kit
  • Free of peak gym membership to all NTU sports facilities
  • Access to sessions focusing on sports lifestyle and psychology
  • Programs led by full or part-time qualified coaches.

Currently, the 1st team competes in the BUCS Premier North Division and is always at the top end of the table. The team recently reached the semi-finals of the BUCS championships, which was a new high for the University that had previously never reached this achievement.

The club attributes its success to being built on hard work, honesty, and humility. They aim to give both players and coaches a platform to flourish and enjoy being part of a team that prides itself on being ambitious and respectful.

There are also opportunities for players to progress to the next level after graduation, through the university’s links with local semi-pro clubs. Furthermore, for players on scholarship, there is an opportunity to train with the U23 Lincoln City FC and compete in a high level of non-league football.

The women’s club consists of 4 teams, with the top 3 competing in BUCS whilst the 4th squad is focused on development and plays non-league games with other local sides.

The club has seen huge success with all 3 BUCS teams having won at least one league title each since 2014. The first team was able to capture their league title in the 2018/2019 season. Judging from the university’s success it’s no surprise that the squad has many players playing outside of the university for teams such as Derby County, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham Hotspur.
