A SUBMERSION INTO SPORTS CULTURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

 INTRODUCTION

When introduced to the sport, you’re consumed by the present events. You live what you see, hear, think and feel. You don’t for one second consider how everything today will be reflected in years to come.

You could then say history is thought about more than the future, mainly because it’s certain and fixed. The happy moments are easier to single out over the uncertainty of seconds ahead of the clock’s ticking hands.

In comes the University of British Columbia and their Thunderbirds varsity team. It’s named after a mythical creature, longly associated with the native Kwakwaka’wakw people. Who legally obtained the concept and name, wanting to preserve the legacy of these people and had their eyes firmly fixed on the future of their culture.

WHAT IS THE SPORTS CULTURE LIKE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

Featuring a framework based on pathways into the sport, one of Canada’s leading universities really encourages participation and athletic improvement to all students, regardless of disability, gender and race.

They use sport to help build relationships, thus providing students with a better sense of cohesion. It’s also detrimental to presenting the ethos of a fun and safe environment, something they swear by.

Students want to succeed and reap all the benefits of combining competition through exercise with education. This can lead to increased focus, confidence, leadership and health. The whole community echos this, with many annual events for different causes. Providing communal use of their facilities, via booking.

SPORTING SUCCESS OF BRITISH COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

  • Consistently produced Olympic standard athletes since the 1920s.
  • Won over 150 national championships in a variety of men’s and women’s varsity sports.
  • Has an established international Quidditch team, ranked #1 in the North West of Canada.

IMPACT OF BRITISH COLUMBIA’S SPORTS CULTURE ON STUDENTS

The sporting facilities at British Columbia university are educational in a number of ways. They’re informative on a biological and neurological level, informing students about what foods they should be eating and how to tailor a diet and training regime that’s in line with their own individual needs.

There’s also an existing mental health hub which looks to help students understand more about their struggles and how opening up to someone can be so relieving. It also does a stellar job at defining the positive links between the exertion of the mind and body.

From the continuous number of athletes at the Olympic games, it’s clear that they’ve been singing the right message for years, proving to be a real beacon of promoting the right values and ethics.

CONCLUSION

Thus concludes our sea bed scrub into the University of British Columbia. We hope we’ve been able to only inform you of the amazing work they do on a sports level, but also the wonders they do for their community.

They realised the surrounding culture of the area and have done an outstanding honorary job of carrying the Thunderbird name and creating a truly great legacy out of Indigenous folklore.

This is a university with a unique history and truly one for you to consider, nationally and internationally.
